This report focuses on the energy needs of health facilities which have very limited access to energy – a common problem in many facilities of low-income countries or emerging economies, but also present in resource-constrained settings of middle-income countries.Available evidence regarding patterns of energy access and its impacts on health services is considered, along with trends in the use of new energy technologies. This evidence is used to develop a rationale and approach for tracking and monitoring energy access in health facilities. This report’s findings are most relevant to clinics and health centers at the primary and secondary tiers of health systems, often struggling to access sufficient energy to power lighting, refrigeration and basic medical devices.
