Next stop Rushnell, the conductor shouted. It jolted Simon back to a reality he had been dreading. Was my metamorphosis complete? Had I changed back into the dull, rural guy, who was upright and very Presbyterian? A sense of sadness overcame him as the train pulled into the station. 8 AM and a century behind is Rushnell's time. As he gathered his satchel & bag, he could see his brother Wyverne unfurling the canvas awning in front of the Aten Clothing Store. He hoped he could get off the platform before his brother spotted him. The three steps down to the platform felt like a cliff, and Simon was dropping into oblivion. The bottom was a jolt, a shock into reality, the smell of coal, a puff of steam, a whistle shout, and Simon was home. He hurried off the platform and onto the street.
