Belian Teorenn, a young telepath, is sent to the Suli Waystation in the Tarei Caste to train as a Knight of the Order, where he learns he is an exceptionally strong telepath, so strong, in fact, that there has never been an equal. Talek Garisha's term as Alyth (Caste Leader) is up, yet that hasn't stopped the assassins from visiting his chambers at night, but twenty years as a political leader has turned him into a capable killer. There is something different with the latest attempt on his life, however. The assassin turns out to be an unfortunate messenger, but he manages to give a portion of his information to Talek before he dies. The message reveals the discovery of a new star in the sky: the prophesized return of an old God. Meanwhile, Belian's training as a Knight of the Dragon Order is cut short as he saves the Tarei Alyth's daughter, Nella, from her new husband: an enemy infiltrator who is to take Talek's place as Alyth, and thus Belian becomes involved in the power play of dark politics.
