Lilly Bere, forced to flee Ireland, lands in Chicago with her fiance who is them brutally murdered. Moving to Cleveland, Lilly marries and finds happiness, despite the Great Depression and World War II. Pregnant at forty-three, she moves to Washington, DC, after her husband disappears, where she becomes a cook for one of the most prominent families in the country. She follows them to Bridgehampton, where she raises her son Ed, who is called up to Vietnam and vanishes. A friend is dispatched to find him and returns not with Ed but with Ed's son, whom Lilly raises and adores- until tragedy strikes.
