Raymonde listened. Again and twice there was noise, clear enough to distinguish it from all the confusing sounds that make up the deep silence of the night, but still faintly that the girl could not tell whether it came from near or far, inside the walls of a large castle or outside from the park darkness.

He rose quietly from his bed. His window was cracked, he pushed open both halves. The moonlight silvered the quiet landscape — grassy grasses and shrubs, where the dilapidated ruins of the old monastery were reflected in gloomy outlines, broken pillars, depleted pointed arches, colonnade debris, and supporting arch fragments. The gentle breath gnashed on solid surfaces, barely causing the bare branches of the trees to sway and rustling in the foliage that burst onto the ears of the hedgerows.
