Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell (Nov 8, 1900 – Aug 16, 1949) was an American novelist and journalist. Mitchell wrote only one novel, published during her lifetime, the American Civil War-era novel Gone with the Wind, for which she won the National Book Award for Most Distinguished Novel of 1936 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937. The book was made into a movie in 1939 and it won many awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography at the Academy Awards. Mitchell died tragically and her novella Lost Laysen was published posthumously in 1996. A collection of newspaper articles written by Mitchell for The Atlanta Journal was republished in book form.
