This is at a time between the two world wars when hedonism meets the murky underworld of The Mafia and drug dealers and when espionage tiptoes on the fringes of normal lives. When Detective Chief Inspector Bernie Bisto discovers a 'stiff' going solo down the River Thames he is drawn into the murky depths of espionage and murder. Hermione Hush, paramour and secret agent, is kidnapped. Bisto then mysteriously finds himself reporting to the paymasters of the secret services and becomes obsessed with rescuing Hermione from the clutches of the Mafia.
