Quite why when any "
pop" act releases remixes the results are dismissed as money-grubbing trash whereas this remix EP resulted in the expected
indie-underground praise says something about said culture's skewed sensibilities. Regardless of context, this is a fine release, actually consisting of both remixes of the title track and other unheard delights. The connecting thread is the excellent
Lois, who contributes vocals to
"Ship to Shore," while for the lovely guitar waft and low beat flow of
"Rougher" she receives the lead performer's credit on the CD's rear case art. The original
Boot Party version of
"Ship to Shore" kicks things off, a sweet and slinky number that shows
Lois can kick out a seductive
soul vocal with the best of them.
DJ Dervish's "ship shape" remix plays around with extra beats and vocal cut-ups while removing the guitars -- it's not a radical change, but a nice enough effort still. The "do that" mix adds in some extra echo and cut-up action but otherwise isn't very distinct, while the concluding "scat" mix buries the vocals behind the slow, steady beats. ~ Ned Raggett
