Working as a hit man in the dangerous underworld of New York, Sam Connor is used to things not going as planned. However when his latest target, the head of a mafioso family, manages to escape from his sites, Sam must finish the job or look forward to a future of constantly being on the run. As his target is driven to the hospital Sam gives chase only to crash his car. When he comes to, he finds himself in a strange church that acts as the gateway between reality and hell. It's here that he meets Satan in all his charismatic glory. The dark lord makes Sam an offer he knows he can't refuse. Take care of a little demon problem for him and he will be granted eternal life and the freedom of his wife Lisa from purgatory. The realization that his wife, who died horribly in a car crash five years previous, was languishing in hell is enough to make Sam commit to the devils deal. However it soon becomes obvious that Satan has no intentions of freeing Lisa. With the help of a Monk known as Pertilius, Sam continues to work for Satan, collecting sacred artefacts which once belonged to the original sinner, while trying to unravel the mystery of why his wife came to be in such a desolate place. What Sam discovers is that no matter how long he continues to help the dark lord he will soon have to face him in a one on one battle for the throne of hell if his wife is ever to be truly free.
