Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun in the Solar System. The planet is named after the Roman god of war, Mars. It is often described as the "Red Planet," as the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. It is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, having surface features reminiscent both of the impact craters of the Moon and the volcanoes, valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of Earth. Scientists have long speculated about the possibility of life on Mars owing to the planet's proximity and similarity to Earth. Although fictional Martians have been a recurring feature of popular entertainment, it remains an open question whether life currently exists on Mars, or has existed there in the past. The book takes a look at all the missions launched to explore Mars, including the ones by the Soviet and the US. Also, a look at future plans to launch manned missions to Mars.
