He acknowledged the spiritual undercurrents present in life and his literary explorations into Christian fantasy writing, such as 'Descent into Hell' (1937), earned him many followers. He dedicated this book to 'The Inklings', a literary group at Oxford of which he was a member, alongside C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.
