In the fourteenth century the Church in Rome ordained the Sovereign Order of the Caduceus to take on the universities and hospitals in the Custodia Terrae Sanctae of Jerusalem. After the birth of the Order, it split into two sects, the Knights and the Chaplains. The Chaplains helped define the societies they lived in by building hospitals and universities to practice all forms of medicine and divinity. The military Knights enforced the will of God, as defined by the Chaplains. The Order, as it exists today, is always at the disposal of any mission assigned to it by the Grand Master who is still a Prince of the Church in Rome. The secret mission of the Order is to forever be prepared to defeat the ministry of the Antichrist which must precede the Second Coming. The Chaplains have become professors of divinity and academic leaders in medicine and evolutionary research at the top universities around the world. The Knights follow them as members of the military, government, or business. This novel takes place within the American Priory of the Order. Evalyn Miranda Steward, a medical student at the Priory's University, is awarded a PhD grant and a Grail Team to prove her hypothesis, that some humans have evolved a new fold in the front of their brains that allows them to perceive their environments in a new way. Evelyn and others on her Grail Team have what they call an Omega Cortex.Adam Ferdinand Pitt, a Sergeant in the Order who has an enlarged Omega Cortex, has invented a necklace which allows anyone to perceive all of the energy surrounding and passing through them.
