The Red Nightingale tells us of a young Berber, Malena, who flees her tribe to Algiers to avoid a forced marriage. Along the way, we meet another Berber, Samantha, banished to N. Africa by Augustine. She starts a line of cave dreamers and the dreams transport us out of past to Malena, who wants be a jazz singer in Paris, for which she has a natural talent. Malena ends up in a sleazy cabaret in a torn Algiers. In her subsequent struggle to earn enough money to pay her way out, she scrubs, sings, runs as a go between for her boss and leads émigrés to the Moroccan border, bound for Spain to eke out a living. Malena's exploits soon embroils her in a French Secret Service plot to steal back Algerian oil. She nearly realizes her escape to Paris with a CIA operative, Lytton Mallory, with whom she falls in love. Just when Paris is within reach, Lytton is murdered.
