Consisting of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, the United States Armed Forces are the military power of the United States government led by the President of the United States as acting Commander-in-Chief and managed by the United States Department of Defense. All branches answer to the Department of Defense except the Coast Guard which is an agency of the Department of Homeland Security. Technically, the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps are also part of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The United States Armed Forces have a long military history and this book explores the history and leadership of the United States Navy including the Navy Reserve. The Navy is tasked with protecting and defending the right to move freely on the oceans and to protect our country against enemies. The U.S. Navy's functions comprise sea control, power projection and nuclear deterrence, in addition to "sealift" duties. As the Navy mission statement states, the goal is "to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas." Also included are the operating forces of the United States Navy as well as a description of the Naval fleet of ships including ships planned for the future.
