It is June 1945 and fifteen-year-old Hans Schaefer is happy to be alive after enduring six years of bloodshed and destruction in his homeland of Germany. As World War II comes to a close, Hans looks forward to a normal life, working as an apprentice and pursuing his studies. Unfortunately, fate has other plans for Hans. After the Iron Curtain descends near his hometown of Wallsburg, Hans inadvertently crosses the line into the Eastern Zone controlled by the Russians. After he is taken into custody by border guards, interrogated, and convicted of being a spy, Hans is sent to a Siberian work camp. As Hans's life is turned upside down, he learns firsthand about the cruelty of the Russians. Now he must remain brave while desperately searching for a way to escape back to Germany and to everything-and everyone-he holds dear. But what he is about to discover is that God answers prayers in his own time.
