This book features the importance of families, particularly the roles played by women, spread over 5 generations. Throughout the book there is a focus on mother/daughter relationships, and the strength of the women involved. The five generations written about were actually known to me, some of the tales I witnessed, others were relayed to me by various great great grandmothers and grandmothers. The work demonstrates how subtle the strength and power combination can be in women, and how women can be instrumental in bringing about change whilst seeming to be powerless. My work also brings together the family cohesion within my family, the memories and tales of things which would be lost and forgotten otherwise. The book is about the family of which the author is very proud, many of those written about contributed greatly to the formation of this nation and much of those contributions were made without praise or comment, like my great grandmother and her two sisters fighting as suffragettes against huge odds so that women could obtain equal franchise, and using their power on the home front to assist them in achieving this wonderful thing, or my Uncle Wal's work as Paddington (NSW) 's mayor and his quiet humility as he got on with the job for twenty-five years. Throughout the book there are many references to other quiet achievers from my fierce great great grandmother to my own children, 5 generations of daughters later. Thus the work symbolises many true blue Australian families, whose tales have not yet been told, and yet illustrate the very fabric of Australian society, and makes popular reading. Less
