German Culture Past and Present is a book of comprehensive history of the Reformation movement in Germany under Martin Luther. This book aims to give a general view of the social and intellectual life in Germany from the end of the medieval period to modern times. The sixteenth century in Germany has greater detail than the later period in the earlier portion of the book, the reason for this is to be found in the fact that while the roots of the later German character and culture are to be sought for in the life of this period, it is comparatively little known to the average educated English reader. The last part of the book rushes through most of the 19th century, the formation of the Prussian empire, and the author gives the reader a piece of his mind regarding Prussia ́s dictatorial aggressiveness and how it tainted the Germans.
