With Ironside in North Russia, first published in 1940, is the account of Britain and her Allies’ valiant but futile attempt to militarily protect Russians opposed to the Communist Bolsheviks in Russia in 1919. Author Andrew Soutar (1879-1941) was a journalist for the London Times assigned to cover Brigadier-General Edmund Ironside and his Allied Expeditionary Force in northern Russia, near the city of Archangel. He traveled with the General and made many excursions in the field to visit soldiers, hospitals, prison camps, and native villages. The book provides a firsthand account of the struggle against the Red Army, the hardships caused by weather extremes, the struggle to move men and equipment, and an overview of the political situation.
