In the chilling novel The Two Destinies by Wilkie Collins, the tricky love story of Mary and George unfolds.  Set in a time in England when social class was very important, these two lovers are denied affection for each other because of Mary’s family’s standing in society. George’s father becomes outraged when he learns his son wants to marry a woman of lower social class than his own. In his anger, he decides to move the whole family to America. But Mary’s grandmother, Dame Dermody, warns George’s father and tells him that if he separates to young lovers now he will meet an early death. She also states that no matter what, George and Mary will find one another again someday because it is fate. And so with that cautioning George’s family leaves for America. Less
