The frequently used term classic, which is of fundamental importance to literature and fine arts, is characterized both by extreme ambiguity and by long-time durability. One of its interpretations - namely classical tradition - as well as its functions and range of application are discussed in the conference papers collected in this book. The authors of Blessed Heritage analyze the reception and transformation of the models and patterns of classical tradition in Russian literature from the 17th to the 21st century in three dimensions: 1) the construction and specific features of the classical tradition of Russian literature from Simeon Polockij to Pushkin and Gogol, 2) the disintegration of classical tradition in Russian literature from the late 18th to the early 20th century, and 3) classical tradition in nonclassical culture.
