The following story is of the simplest character, purposely so designed. The personages who figure in the tale are drawn absolutely from life. I have hopes that the Philosopher though selfish, may be liked, when he is known, for his unselfishness, and the Sentimentalist may waken a sister-sympathy among those many charming women, who though wishing to be gentle and just to their admirers, do not always know their own minds in affairs of love. Whether my heroine chose the right partner for life is for my readers to determine. I myself am not more sure about it then she was.  Less
