The versions move us on top of the Rand, about where Johannesburg now lies. There, Oom Gert, a tractor, with wife and only daughter, went to live. Later came Uncle Koos, a colonist, who bought land nearby. His son Willem falls in love with Dina, Uncle Gert's daughter. After the two families celebrated Perdekraal festival together, Willem and Dina get married. The second verse describes the discovery of the goldfields and the rise of Johannesburg, but also the temptation to which Willem and Dina, who live with Uncle Gert, are exposed and for which they die.
