For decades, as the ruling Hutus vow to cleanse their lands of their ancient enemies, the Tutsi, a bloody and ceaseless act of extermination has torn the tiny nation of Rwanda apart. The result is the Rwandan Genocide, a brutal effort to obliterate a people the ruling Hutu disparagingly call "cockroaches." The Tutsi, desperate and outraged, have mounted a vicious defense to reclaim their lands and their dignity. In the broad, bloody brushstrokes of genocide, it is easy to forget that the horrifying numbers are comprised of individuals. It is easier to forget the stories of those brave individuals who fought for survival and who risked everything to protect them. For those Tutsi lucky enough to escape the Genocide, the Benaco refugee camp in Tanzania offers their only sanctuary. Inside the camp, emotions run high. The alcohol-soaked and clever British director, Elsdon Beckett, fights to deal with the chaos. His job is complicated by the arrival of Dr. Annie Banks, who seems to have arrived only to prove to him, once and for all, that she is over him. Then Joseph Carlton, Jr., a prominent Georgia attorney, unexpectedly shows up. Carlton-for reasons only he knows-has just walked out of the biggest trial of his life and disappeared into Rwanda.
